"ASAC’s mission is to help women to have better births. "

ASAC envisions a world in which every woman gives birth with dignity, and experiences an empowered transition into motherhood, allowing her children to have the best start possible to their lives.

Welcome to ASAC

The Association for Safe Alternatives in Childbirth is a part of a growing network of parents and health professionals who believe that childbirth is a normal and healthy part of life, of special significance to the pregnant woman and her family.

ASAC History

Edmonton’s Association for Safe Alternatives in Childbirth was formed in 1979 as a consumer group concerned with choices in childbirth. Initiated by family physician, Dr. Ben Toane, the establishment meeting drew close to one hundred people. ASAC was formed as a local chapter of NAPSAC (National Association of Parents and Professionals for Safe Alternatives in Childbrith) in Edmonton.

Did you know? ASAC was formed in 1979 to support childbearing families. ASAC was, and continues to be, a completely volunteer-run organization. Birth Issues started as a newsletter, typed out on a typewriter and photocopied.
